Recent developments in home automation products allow your lighting circuits to be coordinated and set for a particular task. This is often known as scene lighting.

In the photo of the dining- kitchen shown below, all the lights in both the kitchen and dining areas are controlled by a scene system. If you are entertaining friends, simply hit the button and the lights over the kitchen gradually dim to half light and the ones over the dining table reduce in brighness to produce a cosy, intimate atmosphere. Any floor lamps can also be included in the system for total lighting control.

Such systems can be extended to your exterior lighting. For instance we can install a remote control system that allows you to switch on your garden lighting (and pond pump) from the comfort of your arm chair. Alternatives may be to control the external lighting using a movement sensor or dusk -dawn sensor.

Remember - not all switches/ dimmers are comparable with all light fittings. Issues such as circuit loading/ switching/ dimming need to be discussed with a professional electrician at the planning stage.
